Southampton fans in the Tavern still do not know whether they will be watching their side in the Premier League next season, with the Saints in real danger of relegation. As you can imagine, our punters clad in red and white aren’t exactly delighted.
After being knocked out of the FA Cup by Chelsea, Southampton have just four games remaining to secure their safety in the Premier League. Now, the Saints will face Bournemouth, Everton, Swansea and champions Manchester City in order to avoid the drop and an end to the footballing project that saw them earn the praise of many.
According to reports in Denmark, Southampton hold an interest in Nordsjaelland youngster – Mathias Jensen. The 22-year-old has had an excellent season, scoring eight goals and assisting six strikes for his team-mates, the kind of attacking prowess that has been seriously missing on the south coast.
Jensen is contracted to the club until 2020 but is valued at just £630k according to Transfermarkt. The Danish media are reporting that Jensen could fetch a fee as high as £6m with Tottenham also interested in his services, though Southampton could surely offer him a better place in which to build his career in England. Even if they are relegated, he could work wonders in the Championship.
With the abundance of talent in the Spurs midfield, a move to St. Marys could be the perfect move, regardless of whether they are still in the Premier League. For the centre midfielder, first-team football must be prioritised if he is to realise his potential which could make Southampton the more attractive proposition.
The Saints have a history of developing youngsters into star talent with players such as Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott and Gareth Bale leaving their famed academy.
Jensen has been capped by his country eight times at U21 level and could be a great addition to Mark Hughes’ squad, Championship or not.
