Our Southampton fans here in the Transfer Tavern are fairly content with the way things have gone this season and, as quoted by The Daily Mail, Claude Puel is hopeful of an added boost in the near future.
The Saints have had a decent enough season so far with them safely in mid-table and in the final of the EFL Cup later this month.
They’ll be keen to win that as silverware is becoming harder and harder to come by for those sides that cannot spend as much as the ‘big clubs’ – something that is reflected in this latest deal.
The Saints are hopeful of adding Martin Caceres into their squad before too long with them just waiting for his work permit to be approved after agreeing a free transfer for him.
But with it yet to go through, there’s still going to be concern until it gets confirmed – despite Puel being confident it will be completed soon.
The French boss said:
“In the next few days we see if he can bring something for the squad and if he signs.
“He is an international player and his quality and his spirit can be interesting. For the moment the priority is that he can sign for Southampton. But for the moment it’s not the reality.”
The Saints could certainly do with an extra defender with Virgil Van Dijk injured and Jose Fonte having left for West Ham in the January window.
The Uruguayan international has plenty of experience from his days with the likes of Barcelona and Juventus and our landlord reckons if he can settle in quickly the men at St. Mary’s will have got themselves a top player.
