According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Southampton are one of a few sides keeping tabs on striker Edin Dzeko. The 32-year-old currently plays his football at Italian giants Roma and has done so since leaving Manchester City back in 2016, with the Bosnia and Herzegovina forward certainly producing the goods during his time at the Serie A side.

Yet reports suggest that Dzeko could be tempted by a return to the Premier League in the future, and Mark Hughes’ Saints are one side keen on a move which would go some way to solving their goal-scoring woes for good.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, the South Coast outfit have been struggling in front of goal for some time now having netted just 37 times in their 38 Premier League games last term, as well as managing only six in their eight league matches this time round.

In fact, Hughes’ men are heavily reliant on striker Danny Ings to produce the goods following his move from Liverpool during the summer, what with the 26-year-old having scored three of those six goals, and the fellow forwards at the club in the form of Charlie Austin, Manolo Gabbiadini, and Shane Long all having failed to net so far.

Thus, it’s pretty clear that manager Hughes has to address his striking woes in January if the Saints are to preserve their Premier League status, and that is why they have to follow-up their reported interest in Dzeko by luring him to St Mary’s come the New Year.

The 32-year-old has been nothing short of outstanding since leaving City for Roma back in 2016, albeit he did move there on loan the season before, with the Bosnian star bagging 39 goals in just 51 appearances in the 2016/17 campaign to help the Italian side to second place in Serie A.

And with 24 goals in all competitions last term for Eusebio Di Francesco’s side, including eight in their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League, the 32-year-old has gone from strength to strength since leaving the Etihad Stadium, but it’s not as if he flopped there in netting 72 goals in 189 games for the Citizens.

And with 50 of those coming in 130 Premier League appearances, which included at least 14 in each of his three full seasons at the club, Dzeko certainly proved his worth in English football and as such would surely be a huge asset to Saints boss Hughes, with the striker possessing the goal-scoring instincts Southampton need, alongside the power and strength needed to lead the line.

As such, with the forward reportedly open to a return to the top-flight, Hughes’ Saints simply must seek to do all they can to bring him to St Mary’s, as the addition of the £22.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) would solve their goal-scoring woes once and for all.
