Southampton supporters have been pretty agitated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side only manage a 0-0 draw at home with fellow Premier League relegation candidates Stoke City on Saturday.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their encounter with the Potters off the back of drawing 1-1 with Burnley in their preceding league encounter, which was a decent way of steadying the ship after their 2-0 loss against Liverpool the fortnight before. Yet the South Coast outfit were unable to record a fourth home league victory of the season on Saturday as they were held by Paul Lambert’s Stoke, thus leaving Pellegrino’s side just a point and a place above the Premier League’s relegation zone with nine games of the campaign remaining.
As such, there have been many frustrated Southampton fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping their team can get a much-needed victory away at Newcastle United this weekend.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Saints supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking them with a summer move for West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster.
And while the 34-year-old would be a useful addition to the Southampton squad, the South Coast outfit should forget about Foster and instead be more ambitious by targeting a move for his Baggies teammate Nacer Chadli instead.
Ultimately, it has been a very testing year for the 28-year-old with injuries decimating his campaign, with the winger only mustering three Premier League appearances for the club due to a muscle and more recently a hip problem – who knows where the Baggies would be had he been fit for the duration.
And while there will be obvious concerns about how well he can come back after a sustained spell out, there is no doubting his quality in the Premier League, with the Belgium international managing 21 goals and laying on 16 assists in 122 appearances at top-flight level for Tottenham and indeed West Brom.
More importantly though, the 28-year-old is exactly the sort of attacking threat that Southampton have been missing this season.
The winger is willing to take defenders on with his pace and trickery and is a very adept finisher when in range – he’d give the Saints the spark that has too often been missing in their forward play this season.
And were Pellegrino’s side to remain in the top-flight, it’s that end of the pitch that needs bolstering having managed just 29 Premier League goals this season, with just five wins and 13 draws coming from their 29 matches so far.
Clearly, they need someone with that match-winning quality to turn some of those draws into victories, and Chadli possesses exactly that – if they had managed to turn just three of those draws into wins, Southampton would be sat level on points with 11th place Everton, such are the fine margins in the top-flight.
Many Saints fans have been crying out for more attacking flair and endeavour from their team this season – making a move for Chadli would certainly be a step in the right direction.
And with West Brom looking increasingly likely to lose their Premier League status this term, Southampton must take advantage and land the £10.8 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) this summer.
