Southampton supporters have been drowning their sorrows in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side throw away a two-goal lead to end up losing 3-2 to last season’s Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday.
Mark Hughes’ men went into their clash with the West London outfit having won just one of their preceding 19 league matches, a run which left them three points adrift of safety ahead of Saturday’s encounter. Yet they looked on course to get out of the bottom three when goals from Dusan Tadic and Jan Bednarek gave the Saints a 2-0 lead, only for Antonio Conte’s Blues to hit back, with a brace from substitute Olivier Giroud alongside Eden Hazard’s strike securing all three points for the 2017 champions.
Subsequently, there have been many frustrated Southampton fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are sincerely hoping that their side can put Saturday’s disappointment behind them when they visit Leicester City on Thursday.
In the meantime though, there has been plenty for our resident Saints supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking their club with a summer move for Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Kieren Westwood.
And while the 33-year-old would likely be a useful signing for the South Coast outfit, they should forget about him and instead seek to land his £1.8 million-rated Wednesday teammate Lucas Joao (as per Transfermarkt).
Ultimately, it has taken the 24-year-old some time to find his feet in English football having made the move to Hillsborough back in 2015, to the point that he was shipped out on loan to Blackburn Rovers last term in a bid for regular first team football.
And even at the start of this season, the Portugal international struggled to force his way into Carlos Carvalhal’s plans, yet the arrival of new manager Jos Luhukay appears to have invigorated the forward, whose form has since been excellent.
Joao has looked a completely different player in recent times in netting eight goals and laying on four assists in his last 19 Championship matches for the Owls, in turn helping them to five wins which have since ended any lingering threat of relegation.
And with Southampton seriously struggling for goals this season, the 24-year-old could be the ideal man to come into St Mary’s and give the place a lift next term.
It is looking more and more likely that Hughes’ side will be playing second-tier football next term, so who better to land than a forward who has proven his credentials at that level in recent times, and is without doubt playing as well as he ever has done in English football.
And even if the Saints were to remain in the top-flight, the 24-year-old may well be able to help them with their goal-scoring problems having netted just 33 goals in 33 league games this term, a problem which could end up costing the club this season.
As such, while Westwood would be a useful addition to the goalkeeping ranks, they should forget about a move for the 33-year-old, and instead target his Wednesday teammate Joao this summer.
