Good odds for Southampton fans despite frustrating start to Pellegrino’s campaign

Southampton fans here in The Transfer Tavern have not been overly impressed with their side’s slow, inconsistent start to the new Premier League campaign.

Two wins, two draws and two losses is nothing for the Saints faithful to get overly excited about, and fans will hope new boss Mauricio Pellegrino can begin to inspire their side to victory in the coming weeks – starting with the trip to Stoke on Saturday.

The sides faced off three times last season in all competitions, with Southampton’s only victory coming in a 3-2 win in a League Cup victory in the Potteries.

However, news reaching the Tavern from The Gambling Times (sourcing odds from Paddy Power) that defender Virgil van Dijk is unlikely to leave the club until next summer will come as a welcome boost to beleaguered fans.

The bookmakers make Van Dijk a clear favourite to stay with the club beyond January, after appearing to attempt to force through a move to Liverpool this summer.

The club are punishing the Dutchman for his antics by restricting him to a bit-part role, with the player having made just one Premier League appearance from the bench this season, though he’s just 3/1 to stay on the south coast during the New Year period.

The consensus between Saints fans here at the Transfer Tavern is that van Dijk has served his time, and it is right that he should return to the starting line-up very soon.

Having a £50 million plus player sat on the bench as a punishment is something the club cannot afford to do, and the summer saga needs to be put to bed so the Saints can get on with their season.

Saints fans, do you feel it is time for van Dijk to come back in to the starting XI? Have your say below…
