Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern will want the club to forget about this past season’s disappointing campaign, and as such will be looking for a busy transfer window this summer.
Mark Hughes, who signed a three-year deal to remain at the Saints following their relegation survival, will be looking to the market to find a number of the suitable targets and could be ready to raid one of his former sides in a bid to rebuild the top-flight club.
And that’s because Swiss media outlet Blick have claimed that Southampton are chasing Xherdan Shaqiri, as it is believed he will leave Stoke City following their relegation from the Premier League.
The 26-year-old has been linked with a number of clubs around Europe, but the South Coast side will hope to convince him to remain in England by offering a reunion with ex-boss Hughes, what with the duo working together at the Potters in recent years.
The winger reportedly wants to have his future decided before the World Cup, yet with just two weeks until the tournament starts, a move may have to wait until the tournament in Russia is finished.
Landlord’s Verdict: The Southampton fans in the Tavern will be delighted if Hughes can reunite with Shaqiri at the St Mary’s, as the £16.2 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) will no doubt improve them as an attacking threat.
The Switzerland international has a vast amount of experience and having worked with the Welshman before, the Saints locals will hope he can hit the ground running and make a solid impact if he does indeed sign for the South Coast outfit.
