Injury crisis hits Southampton ahead of Premier League return

According to The Daily Echo, Southampton boss Claude Puel is facing a real wait to see if many of his stars are going to be fit for the visit for the resumption of Premier League activities this weekend with our resident Saints fans here in the Transfer Tavern also panicking.

Key players such as Dusan Tadic, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Fraser Forster and Ryan Bertrand are all reportedly struggling for fitness ahead of the visit of league leaders Liverpool on Saturday.

This fixture will be remembered fondly from last year by our Saints fans with the club coming from 2-0 down against Jurgen Klopp’s men to win 3-2 thanks to a fine display from Sadio Mane.

Of course now, though, Mane is with the opposition and it looks as though it could be up to some of Puel’s fringe players to make the difference this weekend at St. Mary’s.

There are also doubts over the match readiness of Maya Yoshida as he has had to travel a huge distance in going to Japan and back over the international break so Puel’s squad management is going to be really tested here.

While the Frenchman’s rotation policy hasn’t always proved the most popular amongst our south coast drinkers, he’ll have to be at his best to prepare for the visit of the Reds.

A win for Saints could see them into eighth in the table providing other results also go their way.
