James Ward-Prowse simply must follow Jadon Sancho’s lead and make Bundesliga move

Southampton supporters have been in fine voice in recent times after seeing their side reach the last 16 of the Carabao Cup in midweek.

Mark Hughes’ men went into their encounter with fellow Premier League outfit Everton off the back of a 2-0 defeat to Wolves in the league, in turn suffering their second successive Premier League loss, and fourth of the season. Yet the Saints got back to winning ways in the week with a penalty shoot-out victory at Goodison Park having drawn 1-1 after 90 minutes, with Danny Ings’ opener cancelled out by Theo Walcott’s leveller late on, albeit it didn’t deter Hughes’ men who then went on to win the shoot-out.

As such, there have been many thrilled Southampton fans up and down the country in recent times, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by the recent England squad as announced by manager Gareth Southgate, with Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund earning a spot.

And given how brilliant he has been since making the move to the Bundesliga from Manchester City last year, and how it has got his career going, Southampton star James Ward-Prowse is one man who should follow the 18-year-old’s lead by making a move to the German top-flight.

Ultimately, the 23-year-old Saints midfielder has come up through the ranks at St Mary’s and has since gone on to play 208 times for the South Coast outfit, netting 12 goals and laying on 28 assists along the way.

However, he hasn’t always been a regular at Southampton and that has again been the case this time round, with the one-time England international starting just one of their seven Premier League games so far, and failing to feature in the Carabao Cup win at Everton in midweek.

But having just 18 months ago been part of Southgate’s senior England squad for their friendly against German in Dortmund, it’s clear that Ward-Prowse has the talent and ability to excel for both club and country, but things may need to change at the former for that to happen again in the future.

And given Sancho’s recent success in Germany, a move to the Bundesliga could be exactly what the Saints star needs.

18-year-old Sancho made the decision to leave City back in the summer of 2017 to join German heavyweights Dortmund, and while he didn’t immediately hit the ground running at the Bundesliga outfit, he finished the season very strongly with a goal and three assists in his last four appearances.

And he has taken that form into this term by seriously impressing under Lucien Favre, scoring once and laying on eight assists in just nine appearances for Dortmund, just two appearances of which have been starts.

And that form has earned him a way into Southgate’s senior England squad for the first time, something that may not have happened had he stayed at City little over a year ago.

Thus, such has been Sancho’s success in Germany, Ward-Prowes should take a leaf out of his book by also making the move to the Bundesliga.
