Southampton flirted with relegation last season, but after the arrival of Mark Hughes, the club were guided to safety.
Selling their best players seemed to finally catch up with the Saints last season, as they struggled badly in the first half of the season. Being something of a ‘selling club’, this season had seemed like it had been a long time coming for the Saints, as it is difficult to consistently replace quality players.
In a sub-par season for the Saints last season, James Ward-Prowse really stood out as one of the best players at the St Mary’s outfit. It’s easy to forget the midfield dynamo is still just 23-years-old, as he has been a regular in the Saints starting line-up for so long.
Southampton are a club known for producing top Premier League talent such as Gareth Bale, Theo Walcott, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Adam Lallana. All of these players moved away from St Mary’s to make their names as top players, and Ward-Prowse should consider doing the same.
James Ward-Prowse is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt. The midfielder has been with England all the way through the youth levels, and has one senior cap to his name.
It is unlikely Ward-Prowse will improve any further whilst at Southampton, a new challenge could be just what the player needs to push him on and help him claim a regular place in the England starting line-up.
Ward-Prowse is a very efficient player, who will very rarely misplace a pass in the middle of the park. He was key last season for Southampton in their good performances. As a general rule, when Ward-Prowse plays well, Southampton play well.
The midfielder will regret not looking for a new opportunity this summer.
