According to a recent report from the print edition of The Daily Star (January 8, page 47) (via HITC), Southampton are interested in a move for Ademola Lookman in the January transfer window. The 21-year-old currently plays his football at fellow Premier League side Everton and has done so since 2017, although struggles for regular game time under new Toffees boss Marco Silva this season has plunged his future on Merseyside into doubt.

And reports suggest that Ralph Hasenhuttl is eyeing up a reunion with the 21-year-old at Southampton, having worked together at Red Bull Leipzig last season, with Lookman’s possible arrival potentially spelling very bad news for current Saints star Mohamed Elyounoussi.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while Lookman hasn’t pulled up many trees during his time at Everton in the last two years, his form for Leipzig in the Bundesliga last term was reflective of just how good the 21-year-old is, and indeed could be in the future.

And that’s because the England Under-20 World Cup winner netted five goals and laid on four assists in just 11 appearances for the German outfit as they finished sixth in the Bundesliga under Hasenhuttl - clearly, the Austrian knows exactly how to get the very best out of the attacking sensation.

And were Lookman to indeed move to the South Coast outfit this month, it could spell seriously bad news for the future of summer signing Elyounoussi, who simply hasn’t been able to get going following his move from Basel last year.

The 24-year-old made the move to St Mary’s amid much excitement after impressing for the Swiss giants, yet he has so far failed to live up to that anticipation this term with no goals and no assists in his 14 senior appearances for the Saints.

And with just one Premier League start since the arrival of Hasenhuttl, coming in their 3-1 defeat to Manchester City at the end of December, it doesn’t look as though he has made much of an impression on the new boss - yet given Nathan Redmond’s resurgence under the Austrian, there are clearly roles for the wingers in the 51-year-old’s team.

But Elyounoussi doesn’t look like being the answer at present, hence possibly why Hasenhuttl is looking towards Everton’s Lookman, who excelled under his guidance last term, as an alternative to the Norway international.

And were a move for the Englishman to indeed take place this month, not only would it seriously bolster Southampton’s attacking ranks, ranks that have scored only 21 times this term, but it could also go some way to ridding the Saints of the hugely ineffective Elyounoussi.
