Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are eager to see the club get their transfer business underway after Mark Hughes was announced as their permanent manager.
The Welshman took over from Mauricio Pellegrino and steered the Saints to Premier League safety. The former Stoke boss did enough to convince the Southampton board that he is the right man to guide the club back up the Premier League table and penned a long-term deal. His rebuild of the club starts now with the transfer window officially open.
A wise move for the former Manchester United man would be to raid his former club for winger Xherdan Shaqiri. The Swiss international bagged eight goals and notched eight assists for the Potters last season but couldn’t save the club from relegation. Now, he could be set to leave due to a £12m relegation release clause in his contract.
Valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt, he would be an excellent signing for the Saints. With bags of pace and trickery, he is a nightmare for defenders to handle on his day. He also has an eye for goal, and excellent long shots – no player with at least 15 Premier League goals has scored a higher percentage from outside the box than Shaqiri according to Opta.
Consistency remains his biggest issue. When he puts his mind to it, he can be one of the most dangerous wingers in the league but too often he goes missing. He has also had attitude problems in the past, but Hughes is the ideal manager to iron those out.
