Like last season, Southampton’s campaign hasn’t exactly got off to a flyer. Without a win so far in the Premier League, Mark Hughes’ side look to be carrying on in a similar mould to last year when it comes to Premier League action, though did get a win against Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night.
Hopefully for the Saints, they can carry that momentum into their trip to Selhurst Park later today – a fixture they won last year – and look to get some points on the board. With that in mind, perhaps ‘Sparky’ should turn to some of the players who served them pretty well in the cup in order to keep that winning feeling flowing.
That’s why we recently asked our readers whether or not they wanted Matt Targett to start against the Eagles today. The 22-year-old has seemingly found a new lease of life on the South Coast after impressing so much on loan at Fulham last season, during a time in which Ryan Bertrand has invoked the ire of supporters.
The latter, who was widely regarded as one of the best left-backs in the country until last season, may not be a guaranteed a staring place anymore, such has been the manner of Targett’s form. Indeed, as you can see from the results of our poll, 57% of polled Saints fans are backing the academy graduate for the Palace game ahead of team captain Bertrand.
Needing to get fans back onside, perhaps turning to the youth could be a good option for Hughes.
