Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern will be hoping manager Mark Hughes can turn things around next season after a disappointing campaign that ended just in survival.
The Saints would have been looking to challenge for a European spot last year, yet they spent the majority of the campaign at the bottom of the table fighting for their lives. The former Stoke City boss was brought in to replace Mauricio Pellegrino towards the end, and did the job asked in managing to guide them out of the bottom three.
The locals will look for the club to strengthen in the summer transfer window and would have been given a boost that Manolo Gabbiadini wants to stay at the club, according to reports in Italy.
And that’s because, in an interview with Radio Onda Libera (via Sport Repubblica), the Italy international suggested that he is happy with life in the Premier League, and as such appears committed to the cause at Southampton.
He said: ‘I’m still young and I want to grow in this division, I feel comfortable in the Premier League.’
And these comments are sure to come as good news to our resident Southampton fans, as the £13.5 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) remains a key player at St Mary’s, and as such will hope for a greater influence next time round.
Landlord’s Verdict: Despite having a limited impact with the Saints last season, the fans in the Tavern will be delighted that the striker has reaffirmed his commitment to the club, following rumours linking him with a move away.
The 26-year-old had a difficult season last year, although he still managed to find the back of the net five times and scored their Premier League-saving goal against Swansea City.
The locals will hope he can hit the ground running next year and will be watching him closely.
