According to a recent report from The Daily Telegraph, Marcos Rojo could be set for a move away from Manchester United in the near future. The Argentina international made the move to Old Trafford back in the summer of 2014 as former boss Louis van Gaal sought to improve his defensive ranks, only for the 28-year-old to struggle for regular football under Jose Mourinho this time round.

And reports suggest that the Red Devils are looking to offload the versatile defender in the coming January transfer window, which should be of interest to Southampton manager Mark Hughes, who should seek to reignite the Saints’ previous interest in Rojo in a bid to keep the club in the Premier League.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, 28-year-old Rojo has never really nailed down a regular place in United’s side during his four-year stint at Old Trafford, with 107 appearances to his name in that time, of which just 68 have come in the Premier League.

And with 22 league appearances in the 2014/15 campaign his best return since his move to the North West giants, it’s pretty clear that he is some way down the pecking order at United, as emphasised further by the fact that he has yet to appear for the senior side this season.

And with Mourinho making it clear that he wanted a centre back during the summer, and reports suggesting that he will again call for a centre half come January, selling Rojo will reportedly help raise funds for such arrival - and Southampton must be ready to pounce.

The Saints themselves haven’t been particularly great defensively this season in shipping 21 goals in their opening 12 league games, keeping just four clean sheets along the way in accumulating a mere seven points from those matches.

And if the South Coast outfit are to stay up, not only will they have to score more than the eight goals they have managed so far, but they will also have to tighten up at the back - Rojo could be the man for the job.

While the 28-year-old hasn’t always convinced of his abilities at United, there have been times whereby the Argentine has excelled in the heart of the Red Devils backline, not least in Mourinho’s first season at the club in which he helped them to a 13-match unbeaten league run between October 2016 and January 2017.

And with the added bonus that Rojo is accomplished as a left back, the Argentina international will certainly help bolster the Saints rear-guard, while his experience on the European stage and indeed at international level will surely help Hughes’ side.

Southampton were linked with a move for the 28-year-old just prior to his move to United back in 2014, and with the Saints clearly in need of reinforcements all over the pitch come January, they must seek to raid Old Trafford for the versatile defender.
