The Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern will be desperate for their board to back Mark Hughes this summer to avoid another relegation battle next season.
Saints conceded 56 goals last season and sold Virgil Van Dijk to Liverpool in January, so an experienced centre-back should be a key priority in this transfer window. After being appointed in March, Hughes quickly switched to three at the back with Yoshida in the centre.
However, the Japanese international is prone to mistakes and Saints fans will be hoping for an upgrade on the 29-year-old. If the board are serious about Premier League survival next season then they could sanction a move for Monaco’s Polish hard-man Kamil Glik.
Glik is valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt but his experience and organisational ability would make him the perfect player to spend some of the £75 million Van Dijk money on.
The 30-year-old signed for Monaco from Torino for just under £10 million in the summer of 2016 and won the Ligue 1 title in his first season with Les Rouges et Blancs.
Saints signed Glik’s Polish teammate Jan Bednarek from Lech Poznan in the summer of 2016 for around £5 million but are now crying out for a leader at the back who can replace Yoshida. They also signed Glik’s former Monaco teammate Guido Carrillo from the French club for £19.8 million in January 2018, but the Argentinian striker has struggled on the South Coast and is yet to score.
So, with striking problems a real issue on the South Coast, boosting their defence would at least move to improve on last season’s rather pitiful campaign.
