The Southampton fans here in the Transfer Tavern were hoping to start the summer window well. Indeed, the punters propping up our bar believe last season was a total mess, despite those joyous scenes in Swansea recently, and were praying Mark Hughes could get to work quickly in the transfer market.
Well, with that in mind, reports from the Mirror haven’t exactly gone down all too well. They claim Saints stopped Alex McCarthy is attracting interest from Premier League giants Tottenham as former St. Mary’s coach Mauricio Pochettino eyes up a move for a potential understudy to Hugo Lloris.
McCarthy – who has previously been called into the England squad – ousted Fraser Forster on the South Coast earlier this season and, in the eyes of many, played a pivotal role in keeping the red and white army in the Premier League. With just a year left on his contract, the former Reading custodian would surely have caught the attention of other teams in England.
In fact, Arsenal, Liverpool and newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers are credited with an interest too, potentially creating somewhat of a headache for Hughes, who only signed a long-term with the Saints last week.
As you can imagine, the idea of losing one of the bright spots in an otherwise terrible campaign hasn’t exactly delighted the Saints fans in our bar.
McCarthy will be difficult to keep a hold of. Indeed, there aren’t exactly many available top class ‘keepers available right now and his performances certainly warrant transfer interest. From a Saints perspective, ensuring the 28-year-old lands a new deal should be his first priority.
