Whether he stays or leaves, our resident Southampton fans just want the Virgil van Dijk summer saga to be over.
The defender has dominated headlines over a proposed move to Liverpool and was not in the Saints side that drew 0-0 with Swansea on Saturday officially due to a “virus”, but just a few days after handing in a transfer request.
Mauricio Pellegrino has so far batted away suggestions that the Dutchman will be sold this summer, but do you really want to keep a player that clearly doesn’t want to stay?
If Southampton act fast, one player who they could snatch is Manchester City misfit Eliaquim Mangala. The Frenchman has been in the shadows of the Etihad since falling down the pecking order in 2016 and doesn’t appear to be wanted by Pep Guardiola.
He spent a successful season’s-long-loan at Valencia last campaign, playing 30 La Liga matches.
As aforementioned, Pellegrino’s side will have to act fast. Mangala has been the subject of interest from Inter Milan this summer – as per Sky in Italy, via Sky Sports.
The 26-year-old still has two years to run on his current £65,000-a-week wages, and if they move in, Southampton shouldn’t have too many issues of meeting his demands.
Saints fans, would you take Mangala? Or are you determined to keep van Dijk? Let us know in the comments…
