Southampton could receive (via the Daily Mail) a host of offers for goalkeeper Alex McCarthy in the upcoming transfer window.

The 29-year-old has developed into a key player for the Saints since taking the number one jersey from Fraser Forster. McCarthy has been a mainstay between the sticks for a number of years now and his impressive performances have seen him earn call-ups to the England senior national team. His form has not gone unnoticed with Southampton reportedly braced for offers in the upcoming transfer window.

Reports suggest the Saints are preparing for the worst with plenty of their Premier League rivals keeping tabs on McCarthy’s situation at St. Marys. With Angus Gunn untested at the highest level, McCarthy’s departure should force Ralph Hassenhuttl into the transfer market for a new shot-stopper.

One man who could be a worthy replacement is Liverpool goalkeeper – Simon Mignolet. Valued at just £8.1m by Transfermarkt, the Belgium international was considered the number one at Anfield for a number of years before the arrival of Loris Karius. The German temporarily usurped the ex-Sunderland man from his position before the signing of Alisson Becker in the summer cemented Mignolet’s status on the bench. The goalkeeper hinted at his frustration back in November, suggesting a January exit could be on the cards.

Despite a few blunders during his stay on Merseyside, Mignolet remains a decent goalkeeper at Premier League level. The Belgian has bags of experience which would add some much-needed stability to the Saints back four. In an environment free from the pressures of Champions League football, Mignolet would quickly rediscover his form of old.

Liverpool are unlikely to demand a large fee for his services, so this move should be a no-brainer if McCarthy does eventually depart.
