Southampton fans in the Transfer Tavern are glad to see Mark Hughes pen a new long-term deal with the club after guiding the Saints to Premier League safety.
They left it late but Southampton confirmed their Premier League status for another season on the final day of the campaign. Hughes replaced Mauricio Pellegrino and impressed enough to earn a new deal at St. Marys. Now the former Stoke boss can focus on revamping the squad to help them climb the table.
The Welshman will want to address their side’s lack of goals with Charlie Austin and Manolo Gabbiadini failing to hit the back of the net consistently. If the Saints want to challenge for Europe, they need a 20-goal per season forward. The answer to their problem could be Porto forward – Moussa Marega.
Valued at £10.8m by Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old has enjoyed a stellar season in Liga NOS, netting 22 goals and registering five assists as Porto ended their five-year wait for a league title. The Malian international would be the ideal forward to add goals to Southampton’s forward line.
Marega is an excellent finisher and is strong in the air. He should have no issues adapting to the physicality of the Premier League. He must improve his abilities to hold the ball up if he is to be a success in England but he has time on his side.
With Wolves reportedly interested, the Saints must act quickly.
