Southampton close on title winning coach, decision imminent with Koeman era over

Southampton fans are very edgy in the Football Transfer Tavern as their club are planning the announcement of their new manager following the departure of Ronald Koeman.

According to the The Telegraph, Saints are in line to announce Claude Puel as their new manager this week.

It’s being reported that top brass on the South Coast have done the rounds already since Koeman’s switch to Everton and they’ve been linked with former Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini and ex-Roma chief Rudi Garcia.

However, after taking their time and making their decision in no rush, the club are thought to have whittled their search down to Puel.

While his profile is reasonably low in this country, it’s safe to say he is a big deal in France.

He has won Ligue 1 with Monaco in the past, taken Lyon to the Champions League semi-final and has also helped develop Eden Hazard during his time at Lille.

Still, it is a big gamble, because he has not worked outside of France and he may struggle to make the transition to the Premier League.

In the past however, their appointments of both Ronald Koeman and Mauricio Pochettino looked like a gamble, though both bosses proved to be masterstrokes.

Southampton fans. Would you be happy with the appointment of Claude Puel? Let us know your thoughts below.
