Southampton closing in on major January transfer deal

Southampton fans are excited to see a new player take centre stage at the club and have ordered a new round to celebrate in the Transfer Tavern, following the latest update on a deal.

Sky Sports Italia report a deal is close between Southampton and Napoli for the services of Manolo Gabbiadini, who will be allowed to leave the Stadio San Paolo after seeing first-team opportunities become restricted this season.

The six-cap Italy international is edging closer to a deal worth around £17m; broken down into an initial £13.6m and a further £3.4m in bonuses – which would make Gabbiadini the most expensive player in Southampton’s history, surpassing the figure paid for Sofiane Boufal last summer.

With Charlie Austin out until the Spring, Southampton have needed to bolster their attacking options and Gabbiadini will do exactly that – and the 25-year-old could also push the Saints into European football next season.

Our landlord is excited to see this deal goes ahead and expects a completion way before tomorrow’s deadline, although the fans are still nervous.

The Saints fans by the bar here in the Tavern simply aren’t too sure about this signing, as this is a player who is on the fringes of the Napoli side at present.

Southampton fans, have you made enough signings this month? Let us know in the comments below!
