Southampton: Club eye a move for ‘assist king’ Dejan Kulusevski - Southampton

Southampton are eyeing a January move for Atalanta midfielder Dejan Kulusevski, that is according to Corriere della Sera Bergamo.

The 19-year-old is currently on loan with Parma in Serie A and has impressed this season, scoring two goals while laying off a further five assists in the Italian top-flight (per Transfermarkt).

On Sunday, Kulusevski produced a ‘masterclass‘ performance as Parma shocked Roma by beating them 2-0. The teenager has now reportedly attracted interest from Premier League suitors, with both Wolves and Southampton keen on bringing him to England.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s side were previously reported to be offering closer to £12.5 million (Tuttomercatoweb) and these new reports appear to back up their interest. Southampton, on the other hand, are in desperate need of creative reinforcements in their midfield after a poor start to their campaign this time out. Indeed, the teenager is averaging 2.6 key passes per game (via WhoScored), far more than anyone in the Hampshire side’s squad as it stands, with James Ward-Prowse the highest at 1.4 registered over the same period.

Furthermore, only Sofiane Boufal and Moussa Djenepo average more dribbles than the Swede, so he’d be able to come in and make a positive impact on the attacking front in theory.

The Saints currently lie second from bottom in the Premier League and are in real danger of getting relegated at the end of the season if they can’t turn their results around.

Acquiring someone of Kulusevski’s quality would certainly help their chances of survival, however, though it remains to be seen whether or not Atalanta will be prepared to let him go considering the interest he is gaining at the moment.

With Southampton’s current situation considered, and the fact that both Wolves and even Inter Milan are also reportedly attracted to Kulusevski, the Hampshire club’s chances of winning his signature do look slim at the moment.

However, regular first-team football could be easier obtained playing for Saints than it would at either of the aforementioned sides with both of their current options in midfield considered.
