Southampton: Fans discuss whether James Ward-Prowse should be captain
Many Saints fans are discussing whether Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg deserves to keep the captaincy at St. Mary’s or whether James Ward-Prowse should be given the armband.
Speculation surrounding the situation of the current club captain has resurfaced, with Football Insider reporting that Spurs will make another attempt to sign the Danish midfielder in the summer. Hojbjerg’s current contract ends in 2021 and as it stands he will not be signing an extension.
Ward-Prowse is a massive fan favourite at the club, with the 25-year-old making a name for himself in the famous Saints academy and eventually becoming one of the first names on the team sheet for many seasons (Transfermarkt). The versatile centre-midfielder, who currently finds himself playing as a right wing-back, has made two appearances for England and is a great set-piece taker at St. Mary’s.
There no doubting his pride and passion for the club and many fans believe that now is the perfect time for him to become captain at Southampton. He has experience of being a captain, as Gareth Southgate gave him the armband when he was manager of the England u21’s. However, others feel that Hojbjerg should retain the captaincy.

Can’t just go changing captains willy nilly, hojbjerg has been a good captain since he’s took the armband so why take it away from him. You don’t have to be the ‘captain’ to be a leader.

I don’t think PEH has progressed as we hoped he would when we all called 4 him to be captain, if a good offer came in I wouldnt be too upset 4 him to go. If JWP would sign an extended contract in that circumstance I would ask him to be captain as well. #yescontactsareworthless
