It seems a long time ago now that Southampton were lauded, almost on a weekly basis, as one of the best run clubs in Europe. Indeed, having enjoyed a meteoric rise from League One to the Premier League, those behind the scenes at St. Mary’s looked to be running a well-oiled machine.
The Saints would produce top class talents from their academy before selling on for major profit and then turn to their wonderful scouting team to lure the next big thing to Hampshire. The likes of academy graduate Adam Lallana was replaced with Sadio Mane for example, with the latter then sold to for close to £40m.
While Mane is just one example of that business, its his current Liverpool teammate who is arguably the best on that front. With Virgil van Dijk having a largely transformative effect on the Reds, we asked whether or not Saints fans believe the Merseyside giants underpaid for him back in January.
Obviously, £75m is a huge amount of money (a record for a defender, in fact) though the former Celtic man looks worth every bit of it at Anfield, so perhaps Saints could have pushed for more.
Interestingly, as you’ll see from the results of our poll, opinion is split down on the South Coast. 50% of those who voted believe Liverpool underpaid for the towering Dutchman, while the other half think the club commanded as much as they could have for him.
Either way, Liverpool are onto a winner.
