Will Southampton be able to avoid relegation?

A question many Saints fans are eager to find their answer to soon, yet their team’s resurgence in recent weeks is definitely an encouraging sign.  Indeed, if someone’s to save them from doom or die trying, that’s James Ward-Prowse.

The Southampton faithful have pinned their hopes on the local hero, who’s completed 16 years at the club and is aiming to be the architect of their revival under Ralph Hasenhuttl. The Austrian manager’s done a great job in elevating young talents, but his work with Ward-Prowse’s been particularly commendable.

He is allowing the 24-year-old to fight for his side and peg the Saints forward to win crucial points for themselves. Yet to record an assist for his side, Ward-Prowse is dealing in spectacular goals to inspire the Saints. While his fantastic free-kick at Old Trafford wasn’t enough to salvage a point, he made sure the one against Tottenham Hotspur was.

Ward-Prowse gave a bright showcase of his dedication and impressive skill against Spurs, recording an 89% passing accuracy and making 5 clearances to help them avert danger (stats via Fotmob). However, the cherry to top it all off was the stunning set-piece which eventually gave them three huge points to steer clear of the relegation zone.

The 24-year-old showcased his confidence when he imitated Cristiano Ronaldo’s celebration after the goal. While he’s no Ronaldo, the level of desire James Ward-Prowse’s showing could be key towards helping Southampton live another year in the Premier League.
