According to Sky Sports, Southampton are interested in signing Nottingham Forest right-back Matty Cash this month as they prepare for a Cedric Soares departure.
The 28-year-old confirmed in an interview with The Telegraph last November that he is leaving the club at the end of the season when his contract expires, and Cash has the potential to be a good replacement.
With AC Milan also said to be interested in the Nottingham Forest man, Southampton could find it difficult to lure him to St. Mary’s. But if they are able to, then it could be a very smart piece of business, at least going off statistics.
On the attacking side of things, Cash could really add something to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side from the right-back position. This season under Sabri Lamouchi in the Championship, the 22-year-old has averaged 1.1 key passes and 1.1 dribbles per game (via WhoScored).
That is more than what Cedric is currently averaging (0.7 key passes and 0.3 dribbles per game). The Euro 2016 winner is, of course, playing in a stronger division. But the signs are still promising, with Cash having time to adapt and grow at 22.
If the Saints are in the market for a Cedric successor this month, then Cash looks worth a punt. AC Milan’s interest, if serious, will not make things easy, though.
The potential impact it could have on the future of another young full-back in Yan Valery will also have to be considered. However, as things stand, by no means does this sound like a terrible idea.
