Southampton legend Terry Paine believes that Moussa Djenepo can provide the spark the club need to steer themselves clear of relegation this season.
Djenepo – who joined the Saints from Standard Liege in the summer – has looked a positive addition to the squad when he has featured this term.
The 21-year-old has scored two important goals in both of the club’s victories against Brighton and Sheffield United this time out, with his effort against the Blades a tremendous solo effort which really showcased his talents.
Unfortunately, the Mali international sustained a muscle injury during that game which caused him to miss Southampton’s following five league matches – four of which the southerners lost.
However, now he is back fit again, there are high hopes that he can provide the spark which will see the Saints start to pick up form in the Premier League – something which Paine believes he is capable of.
Can Moussa Djenepo rescue Southampton's season?
“I’d like to see the young Djenepo play on Saturday and get a sustained run, free of injury,” said Paine (via Daily Echo).
“He’s given glimpses of hope and if he can get a run in the side and settle down in the side he might just be the difference.
“He’s only 21 and only come in this season and got the injury so hasn’t really had a chance to establish himself.
“If he can adapt to the Premier League he’ll be big asset. But he needs to play in his right position to benefit the team.”
Judging from what the winger has delivered so far, Paine is totally right with his comments.
The injury was frustrating as he was just finding form, though if he can regain full fitness and pick up where he left off prior to his absence, there is every chance he can help Southampton claw themselves out of danger in the coming weeks, so long as he put in the position to thrive by the manager.
