Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are eagerly anticipating the 2018/19 Premier League season, what with their side seeking to improve upon their ultimately disappointing 17th place finish last time round.
The South Coast outfit endured a pretty miserable season for the most part, which saw manager Mauricio Pellegrino pay with his job back in March given his side were lingering in a relegation battle. Former Stoke City chief Mark Hughes took over at St Mary’s, and the 54-year-old certainly did the job asked of him in leading the club to safety, eventually finishing a place and three points clear of the bottom three.
As such, there are many optimistic and expectant Saints fans in the Tavern at present, several of whom are likely to be intrigued by recent reports suggesting that defender Luke Shaw is set to receive a new contract offer from Manchester United.
But given the £13.5 million-rated (as per Transfermarkt) ace’s difficulties in the North West, Southampton must seek to give the 22-year-old something to think about by making a move for him this summer.
Clearly, things just haven’t worked out for Shaw since his move to Old Trafford back in 2014, with a combination of injuries, a lack of form, and a seemingly strained relationship with manager Jose Mourinho contributing to his struggles.
What do you think of the World Cup so far? Let us know
The 22-year-old has managed just 66 senior appearances for the Red Devils, of which just 43 have come in the Premier League, with the England international now seemingly behind winger Ashley Young in the left back pecking order at the North West giants.
Thus, while a new contract may be an indication that Mourinho is willing to back the left back, Shaw himself must decide whether his long-term future is indeed at Old Trafford, with it arguable that his prospects, as it stands right now, look pretty bleak.
And that is why Southampton must give him something to think about by making a move this summer, as Shaw enjoyed the best football of his career at St Mary’s to propel him to the top of the England pecking order, and of course to earn a move to United.
The defender excelled on the South Coast, particularly under now-Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino, to suggest that he could be the next big thing for both club and country – there was a reason Louis van Gaal’s United spent £30 million on the left back in 2014.
And with six caps for England in 2014 and 2015, Shaw looked set to become the long-term left back for the Three Lions, and the feel-good factor he enjoyed at Southampton earlier in his career may be what he needs to experience again to reignite his career.
And with current number one left back Ryan Bertrand also having been linked with a move away in recent times, Hughes may well be on the lookout for a replacement – Shaw without doubt fits the ball.
Thus, with United reportedly ready to offer Shaw a new deal, the Saints must make a move for the 22-year-old to give him something to think about regarding his future at Old Trafford.
