The Saints have had an average start to the season but with Mark Hughes in charge and if the players perform to the best of their abilities, they could be looking up once again.
Southampton were a team defining the odds just a few seasons ago as it wasn’t unfamiliar to see them battling for a place in the top six, which they eventually achieved. After continuously buying and selling players though, there was always going to come a season where their investment didn’t work and that what last season.
Having just survived relegation, Southampton this season ensured they spent but in January they should continue that trend and eye another top attacker, this time in the form of Brentford’s Ollie Watkins.
Watkins, who is valued at £6.3 million on Transfermarkt, has yet again been a live wire for Brentford as he continues to show why a Premier League move isn’t far away.
The winger was playing all the way down in League Two just a few seasons ago but now he consistently finds the back of the net in the Championship, as well as being a menace to try and contain.
This season again has been no different as the 22-year-old has already found the net four times, furthermore providing two assists as well in his 10 appearances.
As a winger on either side and a forward on occasion, Watkins could provide extreme competition for places that spurs the rest of the players on to always performing, knowing that if they don’t, the Englishman would be there to take their place.
Southampton have always been a club to bring through the young players and although signing him, they could nurture Watkins and turn him into a superstar. Up front with Danny Ings, he’d be ideal.
