According to Football Insider, Jose Mourinho will attempt to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the summer but will struggle as Southampton want him to stay.
Ralph Hasenhuttl has made it clear that he wants club captain Hojbjerg to stay on the south coast after Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made him a priority to try and sign in the summer. As per the report, the Saints refused to let him leave after Spurs attempted to sign him in January and it looks like they plan to do the same again if there is an approach for the Danish midfielder.
Hojbjerg has made 27 appearances this season and the 24-year-old has already appeared 103 times in the Premier League. It is easy to see why the club wants the central midfielder to stay at the club as he has been pivotal to Southampton’s season. Although he doesn’t provide a lot of goals and assists, Hojbjerg has made 81 accurate long passes this season, emphasising how key he is at changing the game from defence to attack. (Premier League)
He is also providing good cover for his defence, making 280 recoveries and 39 interceptions.
If he was to leave, Hasenhuttl would struggle to replace the ex-Bayern Munich player so all associated with the Saints, especially the manager, will be hoping that they can keep hold of him.
With Hojbjerg already captaining the side at the age of 24, it is clear to see how valued he is by the manager. However, it looks as if it will be a struggle to keep him as there are currently no signs of him signing a new contract. His current contract ends in 2021 so Hasenhuttl will have to decide if they want to risk keeping him and losing him on a free or reluctantly selling him this summer for a large transfer fee.
