The Saints are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements when the January transfer window reopens in just over three months’ time, having conceded more goals than any other top-flight side so far this season (29).
Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are currently second from bottom in the Premier League and face the all too real threat of relegation to the Championship if they are unable to change their fortunes.
In the last seven league games alone, Southampton have conceded 23 goals (per Soccerway), making it abundantly clear just how they find themselves in their hugely unwelcome predicament at this stage of the campaign.
Artur Jorge has been a pivotal member of Vitoria’s back-line this term, with the Portuguese outfit conceding just seven goals this season.
Should Southampton push the Sam Allardyce button?
Yes, staying up is all that matters
Absolutely not, I'd rather go down
Sport Witness claim that the Saints have been tracking Jorge’s progress for a few months and could well make an offer for him in January.
Vitoria will be looking to recoup a significant transfer fee for their star defender, however, though the report states that Southampton only value Jorge at around €1.5m (£1.28m), so it remains to be seen if a deal can be struck between the two clubs.
Signing a competent central defender simply has to top the list of priorities for Southampton in January. The club are really struggling near the foot of the Premier League and clearly don’t have the defensive quality to pick up many clean sheets this term.
However, Jorge is completely unproven in England and is currently only performing in the Portuguese top-flight, which is a totally different ball game to that of the Premier League. With that in mind, perhaps looking for a more experienced player who is proven in England would be a better option for the Hampshire strugglers.
