According to reports in France courtesy of Girondis4Ever, Southampton were one of several teams recently in France to watch striker François Kamano in action for Bordeaux against Dijon.
Do Southampton need to go down to properly rebuild?
The Saints have reportedly been tracking the 23-year-old’s progress for some time now, with the French outlet claiming that the south coast club have shown interest in the forward for the previous year at least, potentially longer.
Scouts from both Everton and Watford were also present at Sunday’s game – in which Bordeaux won 2-0 and Kamano scored the opener – alongside a ‘flurry’ of representatives from fellow Ligue 1 sides.
Southampton’s lack of firepower in front of goal is one of the main reasons why they currently find themselves struggling near the foot of the table. Defensive issues are the main cause but with only Danny Ings managing to score more than two goals for the club, it is abundantly clear that reinforcements may be required.
Big summer signing Che Adams is yet to open his account for the club despite facing plenty of opportunities in front of goal, which has led to manager Ralph Hasenhuttl benching the 23-year-old for the club’s previous five league matches.
Kamano is certainly a player of interest for the Saints, who definitely need help in the goalscoring department. However, giving the aforementioned Adams more of an opportunity before trying to purchase a new striker would perhaps be a clever idea for Hasenhuttl if he is to prioritise strengthening elsewhere.
It is still only November and although the ex-Birmingham front man has struggled so far, he proved last season that he has bags of ability by scoring 22 goals for the Blues.
Indeed, according to the Telegraph in the wake of last month’s humiliating 9-0 defeat at home to Leicester City, there were claims that those behind the scenes were keen to address the most pressing issues in defence when the January window rolls around, so it would make sense to get that sorted right away.
