Saints fans in the Transfer Tavern are beyond sick and tired of Liverpool snatching their best players.
It’s almost annual tradition for Liverpool to come calling. And this season is no different following the current on-going saga over the future for Virgil van Dijk.
Southampton are determined to keep their skipper who has told new boss Mauricio Pellegrino he wants to leave the club.
It appeared the Dutchman was closing in on a move to the Reds post-season before the Saints complained to the FA over alleged foul play. Liverpool ultimately halted their pursuit but have now returned with double the determination to get their man.
One player who looks a certainty to leave Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer is Mamadou Sakho. The Frenchman who was forced to train with the under-23’s before being shipped out on loan last season has been omitted from Liverpool’s 30 man pre-season squad.
Crystal Palace are keen on recruiting the defender on a permanent deal, but Southampton should capitalise on the Reds’ quest for Van Dijk and propose Sakho is included in a deal for their captain.
The skipper has been rated at £60 million this summer, while Liverpool have demanded £30m for Sakho, who showed his class at Palace last season.
£30 million plus Sakho may just be enough to persuade the south-coast club into parting with their talisman.
