Southampton are hoping that with a full season under Mark Hughes, they can achieve a lot more than they did last season, after finishing in 17th place.
The Saints have had an average start to the season but they know full well with the players they have in and around their squad, pushing forward should be the aim this season.
They now have a free-flowing goalscorer in Danny Ings and he was a player they certainly didn’t have last season, hence the desperate struggles
Now though Southampton could really do with another quality midfielder and someone who offers exactly what Newcastle’s Jonjo Shelvey does.
Shelvey, who is valued at £13.5 million on Transfermarkt, is a tough-tackling midfielder that would be a proper addition at St Mary’s.
Southampton could do with a midfielder who can offer them something going forward and in defence and that is exactly what Jonjo Shelvey’s addition would bring. Alongside the defensive-minded Mario Lemina and Oriol Romeu, Shelvey could adopt a free role in the middle of the park, using his best skills to spread the ball around the pitch, break-up play and even contribute towards goals himself.
The 26-year-old has played three games this season in midfield for Newcastle and last time out there were even calls for Shelvey to be brought into the England set-up, such was his great form.
He became a vital player that led Newcastle from relegation-threatened to top ten dreamers and his contribution could not be underestimated, despite his name not being associated with many goals.
Southampton could be fine with their current options but if they want to take their midfield to the next level, the Englishman could fill that void and do a great job for the Saints.
