Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern are relishing their side’s clash with defending Premier League champions Chelsea on Saturday, what with the Saints in dire need of points in their battle to avoid relegation.
Mark Hughes’ men have endured a woeful season in the top-flight, with the South Coast outfit heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures 18th in the division and three points adrift of safety, having won just five of their 32 league games so far. Yet they have the chance to move out of the bottom three for a few hours at least if they pick up all three points against Antonio Conte’s Chelsea, who themselves haven’t enjoyed the best of seasons in their Premier League title defence.
As such, there is much anticipation among our resident Southampton fans ahead of Saturday’s encounter, with those supporters lining up at the bar in the Tavern well aware that their team are running out of time in their bid to preserve their top-flight status.
In the meantime though, there has been much for Saints fans to discuss, not least recent reports linking midfielder Dusan Tadic with a move to Champions League semi-finalists Roma this summer.
And while the Serbia international has performed well for the South Coast club over the years, Hughes and the Saints hierarchy should seek to cash in on the £13.5 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this summer, even if they do indeed stay in the Premier League.
Ultimately, while the 29-year-old has played a key part in Southampton’s impressive efforts and Premier League finishes over the past few years, he has simply not been good enough for the club this term.
The Serbian star, who will be hoping to make his country’s squad for the World Cup this summer, has bagged just three goals and laid on only three assists in 30 Premier League games for the Saints this season, a tally not in keeping with his previous efforts at St Mary’s.
Significantly though, several of our resident Southampton fans have been questioning Tadic’s application this campaign and his all round commitment to the cause, to the point whereby they are often left stunned when he is again named in the starting eleven on a Saturday.
And regardless of what league the Saints are in next season, they simply do not need players like that.
Be it in their quest to achieve a return to the top-flight in the Championship, or perhaps their bid to move to the next level in the Premier League if they stay up, everyone has to be pulling the same direction and giving 100% – Saints fans aren’t convinced that Tadic is doing that.
As such, were the opportunity arise to sell the 29-year-old this summer amid reported interest from Roma, Southampton should not hesitate in sanctioning the Serbian’s departure during the close season.
