According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Arsenal are eyeing up a late January move for defender Gary Cahill. The 33-year-old currently plays his football at fellow Premier League giants Chelsea and has done so since leaving Bolton Wanderers back in 2012, although struggles for regular game time under new Blues manager Maurizio Sarri this season has called his future at Stamford Bridge into question.

And a recent report from The Daily Mirror suggests that Unai Emery’s Gunners are seeking to strike a deal for the £9 million-rated star (as per Transfermarkt) this month, as should Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl as he eyes the reinforcements his side need to stave off Premier League relegation.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, while there has certainly been an upturn in form at St Mary’s following Hasenhuttl’s appointment back in December, there is still plenty of work to be done if the Saints are to indeed retain their top-flight status this term.

The South Coast outfit sit in 15th place in the division and only three points clear of the bottom three with 15 matches of the campaign remaining, but given their tally of 40 goals against in their 23 games so far, it’s clear that to pull away from danger for good, they are going to have to tighten up at the back.

And the departure of centre back Wesley Hoedt on loan earlier this month has somewhat depleted the defensive ranks at St Mary’s, as although Jannik Vestergaard, Jack Stephens, Maya Yoshida, and Jan Bednarek remain at the club, the fact Hasenhuttl has regularly utilised a back three in recent times suggests another option wouldn’t go amiss.

And in Chelsea’s Cahill, a vastly experienced defender who has won a lot of what the game has to offer, the 33-year-old could be the ideal addition this month.

Ultimately, the arrival of former Napoli boss Sarri has seemingly put pay to the Englishman’s career at Stamford Bridge given he has appeared just once in the Premier League so far this season, and only six times in other competitions to underline just how far down the pecking order he really is.

But that shouldn’t detract from what has been a stellar career at the top level for the Blues centre back, what with the former England international helping the club win two Premier League titles, three domestic cup competitions, as well the Champions League and the Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge.

And one mustn’t forget that it was only a matter of seasons ago that, in Antonio Conte’s revolutionary back three, the 33-year-old excelled to help Chelsea win the Premier League at a canter ahead of second place Tottenham - not only will he help Southampton off the pitch, but he still has the ability to make a difference on it as well.

Clearly, there’s a reason that Emery’s Arsenal are eyeing up a move for the defender this month, not just because they themselves are thin on the ground in the defensive ranks, but because Cahill is still a very adept centre back at Premier League level, and could certainly do a job for many teams in the second half of the campaign.

Yet Hasenhuttl’s Southampton must seek to fend off the Gunners in pursuit of the 33-year-old, whose addition would go some way to aiding the Saints in their bid to stave off relegation this season.
