Southampton flirted with relegation last season. They need to make improvements in their forward line to avoid being dragged into another relegation battle.

Shane Long just seemed to forget where the goal is last season. The front man limped to two Premier League goals in 30 appearances. After bursting onto the scene last season, Manolo Gabbiadini failed to impress and Charlie Austin didn't look all that great either.

The South Coast sides lack of goal scoring prowess is a major reason they ended up at the wrong end of the title. Finally, it seemed selling their best talents for many years had cost the club. Mark Hughes came to the club and managed to turn the fortunes around of the Saints. but questions around their strikers remain.

Mark Hughes will be aware he needs to add to the clubs forward line to have a positive season next time out. There is talent at St Mary's no doubt, with the likes of Ward-Prowse in the squad, but extra quality is needed.

With that in mind, here are two available stars to transform the attack at St Mary's...

Abel Hernandez on a free transfer would be a tremendous piece of business at St Mary's.

Physical and strong, he would not go missing in games, as Shane Long has a tendency to do. Every time he steps on the pitch, he will stand up and be counted. His technical ability is certainly to good to be playing second tier football.

The Uruguayan netted eight goals in ten Championship appearances last season.

Mark Hughes could do much worse than bringing Hernandez to St Mary's.

Patrick Roberts would be a fantastic signing for Mark Hughes.

The Manchester City player has electric talent, but breaking through at the star-studies Etihad is a near-impossible task. The striker has seriously impressed in his loan spells away from the Etihad, particularly with Scottish champions Celtic.

He has great skill, but has the finishing to match. Southampton were let down by the finishing of their front men last season. The club should move to try and bring in Roberts before another club swoops in for him.
