Southampton fans here in the Tavern continue to grow wary over the possible sales of 2 St. Mary’s stars, having done so well to keep a hold of most of their best players over the course of the summer window.
The Saints have endured an average start to the season by their standards as they sit just inside the bottom half of the table in 11th position. Having taken 9 of a possible 26 points, it looks as if the Southampton side have been underperforming so far this season as they look to improve on their measly start.
Their star man of last season Virgil Van Dijk has been a miss of late as he has only made the 2 starts for the club this season after recovering from an injury which put him on the sidelines for 8 months. The central defender became under much criticism from the Saints fans as he handed in a transfer request during the summer ahead of his proposed move to Liverpool.
However, the Dutch international looks set to make an appearance against West Brom in the Saints’ next game, as Mauricio Pelligrino tries to reintegrate his skipper back into the first-team.
Another key performer from last season, Ryan Bertrand, who has played all 8 games for the Saints this season, has seen his performances drop somewhat. The England international was always one of the most consistent players for the club, though hasn’t looked as good in recent weeks.
Indeed, in recent times, the 28-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to Premier League leaders Manchester City.
Now, it may be a fairly cynical way of looking at things, but surely it’s unlikely the Saints will be able to fend off January interest in both. Surely one will go.
So, we’re asking Saints fans, with both men linked with exits, which player would you least want to see the back of?
