Southampton have become a new side under Ralph Hasenhuttl but could still do with some new signings to bulk out their squad.
Under the Austrian coach, Southampton have looked far fitter and much more organised, which has come together to give the Saints a much better record in games.
They’re pushing further and further away from the relegation zone but the Premier League is extremely unpredictable, meaning that at any time, they could be sucked right back into the mix.
Southampton have been busy letting players go during the transfer window and a potential mistake could be allowing Cedric to leave, with the Portuguese having departed on loan for Inter Milan.
In his place, Saints have to plot a move to sign Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian.
Darmian, (who is valued at £9 million on Transfermarkt) is out of contract by the end of this season meaning now is the time for the Italian to plot a move away from Old Trafford, given that it’s surely extremely unlikely he will remain in a Manchester United shirt beyond this season.
Juventus and Inter Milan were reportedly (as per ESPN) in the race to sign Matteo Darmian yet Cedric’s exit opens up the gap for the Saints and a late January raid could be a godsend down on the south coast.
With only 19-year-old Jan Valery left at right-back, Southampton will find themselves to be very short of options a defence, one injury or suspension away from a disaster.
Matteo Darmian knows the Premier League and would be a cost-efficient signing for the Saints.
