The Southampton fans in and around the Transfer Tavern are expecting a much better season from their team next season based on the early signings they have made and are rumoured with.

Having survived by the skin of their teeth last season, Mark Hughes will be hopeful of bringing back the very best times at St Marys Stadium, which have been enjoyed recently with the team qualifying for Europe. Their defence is still their main concern and in an attempt to improve it, our punters think that Timothy Fosu-Mensah, (who is valued at £6.3 million on Transfermarkt) is exactly the kind of versatile player they need at the club.

The Dutchman of Manchester United played with Crystal Palace last season, making 17 league starts in an impressive loan spell. Fosu-Mensah was utilised in both centre-back and right-back as he helped steer the Eagles away from the relegation fight also.

At 20-years-old, the defender already has a wealth of Premier League experience, something that shouldn't be neglected by Southampton when selecting the man they want to acquire defensively. He has tremendous pace for a defender which has often helped out his team if an opponent is running through on goal and his strength is also a big attribute in allowing him to fit in at both centre-back and right-back.

Southampton almost made a costly mistake by selling Virgil Van Dijk in January so bringing a new defender in this summer would prove to be a vital part in the Saints' hope for a more successful season.
