Southampton are still getting used to Mark Hughes and his back-room staff but are more than confident that they have enough quality to avoid the drop this season.
The Saints have had an average start to the season but they have brought in a number of good players that already leave them in a better position to finish higher than 17th next season.
It was a disaster for all involved but it was total relieve when they survived and would play another season in the Premier League.
Mark Hughes has had time to identify players he wants and he has been supported by the board to go out and buy those players.
Those new signings though leave uncertainty for the current players at Southampton, who could be about to have their position replaced, which one of those stars being Shane Long.
Long, who is valued at £6.3 million on Transfermarkt, really didn’t perform last season, a big reason as to why Mark Hughes and his coaches invested their time finding a goalscorer like Danny Ings.
Danny Ings has faced a big battle against injuries for the last few seasons but now back at his home club, he is hopeful of doing himself justice in a red and white shirt.
31-year-old Long only found the net two times in 30 Premier League appearances last time out, which obviously isn’t enough for a striker in the top flight. As hard as he works, a striker’s main aim is to score goals and he simply didn’t deliver enough.
For that reason, plus the other strikers he has to contend with, Shane Long doesn’t seem to have a stable future at St Mary’s Stadium.
