Southampton supporters have been in high spirits in the Transfer Tavern during the current international break, having seen their team go into the fortnight interruption off the back of reaching the semi-finals of the FA Cup.
The South Coast outfit got past Fulham, Watford, and West Brom to set up a last eight encounter with giant-killing Wigan Athletic, who produced one of the biggest upsets of all time by beating Manchester City in the previous round. However, Mark Hughes’ Saints had all the answers at the DW Stadium back on March 18 as goals from Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Cedric Soares sealed the victory for Southampton, thus earning them a last four clash with Premier League champions Chelsea at Wembley next month.
Thus, there have been many thrilled Southampton fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping their team’s fine cup run can kick-start their Premier League campaign, which they resume away to fellow strugglers West Ham on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Saints supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports linking Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet with a move away this summer following his demotion in Jurgen Klopp’s pecking order.
And given his impressive efforts at Sunderland, alongside the current goalkeeping woes at St Mary’s, the £10.8 million-rated outcast (as per Transfermarkt) should seriously consider reinvigorating his career by moving to Southampton this summer.
Ultimately, the 30-year-old has never fully convinced during his time at Anfield despite often retaining the number one jersey, although Loris Karius has since the turn of the year taken the gloves from the Belgium international, and done well to suggest that he is likely to retain Klopp’s faith in the weeks and months to come.
As such, Mignolet looks set for a sustained spell on the substitute’s bench, but for a shot-stopper not used to playing second fiddle and one currently on international duty with Belgium, he is not likely to be happy behind 24-year-old Karius.
And Southampton could be the ideal destination given their own goalkeeping struggles, what with number one Fraser Forster enduring a testing season between the sticks for the Saints, to the point that he was dropped in favour of Alex McCarthy at the rear end of 2017.
And while his compatriot McCarthy has done well since coming in, doubts remain over his long-term suitability to be the club’s chief goalkeeping choice, and as such they could well be on the lookout for a new shot-stopper come the summer.
And Mignolet could be their man.
The 30-year-old earned a move to Anfield back in 2013 after hugely impressing at Sunderland, and a club further down the division and perhaps in less limelight than Liverpool could well bring the best out of Mignolet once again – ultimately, he kept 33 clean sheets in 101 games at a declining Sunderland side between 2010 and 2013.
Clearly, the Belgian star is a hugely adept goalkeeper and one who can certainly do a job for a top-flight club, although it doesn’t look like that club is Liverpool.
But with Southampton arguably in need of goalkeeping reinforcements, the 30-year-old should consider getting his career going again by making the move to the South Coast this summer.
