There have been mixed emotions among Southampton supporters in the Transfer Tavern this week after seeing their side bag a late leveller to earn a 1-1 draw from their trip to Burnley in the Premier League last time out.
Mauricio Pellegrino’s men went into their clash with the stumbling Clarets off the back of booking their place in the last eight of the FA Cup courtesy of a 2-1 win over West Brom, a result many of our resident Saints fans was hoping could inspire their disappointing league form. Yet they had to settle for a share of the spoils at Turf Moor last time out as Manolo Gabbiadini’s late effort cancelled out Ashley Barnes’ opener for Sean Dyche’s side, although the point was enough to keep the Saints out of the bottom three with ten games of the season remaining.
Subsequently, there have been mixed emotions among Saints fans in the Tavern, with some happy to have clinched a point from a tricky away trip, while others were frustrated given that Burnley haven’t won a league game in 2018, and thus the clash represented an opportunity to get back to winning ways.
And while relegation remains a distinct possibility for the Saints this term, many of those Southampton fans lining up at the bar are already looking ahead towards the summer, and what business their team may seek to do if they indeed stave off the drop.
And were Swansea City to lose their Premier League status this term, the South Coast side should seize the initiative and lure Jordan Ayew to St Mary’s during the close season.
Ultimately, the 26-year-old has been in decent form for the South Wales outfit this time round with nine goals and three assists in 36 appearances in all competitions, five goals and two assists of which have come in the Premier League.
And with all five of those goals coming in games that Carlos Carvalhal’s side have gone on to either win or draw, it’s clear that the Ghana international is a hugely influential player for the Swans, and one who is likely to be in-demand were they to get relegated to the Championship.
And given how impressive he has been for Swansea this season, alongside the clear weaknesses in the current Southampton team, he’d be a fine addition to the Saints squad for next season.
Be it upfront in a central role or down the left-hand side, Ayew always carries an attacking threat, with his pace and trickery seeing him perform well as a winger, while his eye for goal has seen him used regularly as a centre forward in recent times.
And Southampton’s biggest issues this season have been goals – they simply haven’t scored enough.
29 goals in 28 Premier League games is not the worst record in the division, but it’s one they must improve upon next term if they are to regain their place in the top half of the table – they cannot rely on Charlie Austin’s goals, as the striker has proven too injury-prone to be depended upon.
And that is why Ayew would be the perfect summer signing for the Saints – he has proven his worth as a Premier League forward this season, and would add a significant amount of pace and talent to the attacking ranks at St Mary’s.
Thus, the goal-shy South Coast outfit simply must make a move for the £6.3 million-rated ace (as per Transfermarkt) over the summer.
