La Liga

This La Liga striker swoop would surely help keep Southampton firing all the way to survival

Southampton fans will look back on 2017 with mixed emotions, with their side comfortably retaining their Premier League status over the course of the year.

Saints fans here in The Tavern have become used to mediocrity in the past twelve months, but the £75 million sale of defender Virgil van Dijk has filled the friendly bunch with optimism heading into the second-half of the season. Dutchman van Dijk made it clear he wanted to leave early on, and was largely kept away from the squad as manager Mauricio Pellegrino attempted to maintain a balance who actually wanted to be playing their football at St Mary’s.

The pool table is the favourite haunt of Southampton regulars here in The Tavern, and our landlord couldn’t help but pull a pint and join the south coast bunch to chew their ear off about where their windfall should be spent.

A new striker kept popping up, and fans were keen to unearth a gem who wouldn’t break the bank, but would be ready made to start banging the goals in immediately. Our landlord had a think, and the name Cedric Bakambu sprung to mind.

The Villarreal striker has consistently scored goals in La Liga for several years now, and his nine-goal haul at the halfway stage of the season is something Pellegrino must take into consideration. The French-born, Congolese international is a strong, pacy forward with the ability to find the back of the net, and possesses all of the attributes to adapt to the physical demands of the English top flight.

A move for the 26-year-old must certainly be on the mind of the hierarchy at St Mary’s.
