According to a recent report from The Daily Mirror, Vincent Janssen could be set for a move away in the January transfer window. The Netherlands international currently plays his football at Premier League outfit Tottenham and has done so since leaving AZ back in 2016, although struggles for regular game time under manager Mauricio Pochettino this term has called his future at the club into question.

And reports suggest that the 24-year-old could be set to end his Spurs nightmare this month as Pochettino seeks to streamline his squad ahead of the second half of the season, and that should be of keen interest to Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl as he eyes the signings that can move his team away from the Premier League’s relegation zone.

The Breakdown

Ultimately, former Red Bull Leipzig boss Hasenhuttl has inherited a Saints side that finished 17th in the top-flight last term and look set for another season of struggle this time round, with the South Coast outfit languishing in the bottom three after 21 matches of the campaign.

And part of the club’s problem in the last 18 months or so has been their inability to put the ball in the back of net, bagging on just 21 occasions so far this season, and scoring just 37 goals last time round as they narrowly avoided the drop under the guidance of Mark Hughes.

It’s not through the lack of trying though, with the Saints sat eighth in the division in terms of chances created so far this season, alongside finishing seventh in that particular table last term too, it’s just a case of being more clinical in the final third when those opportunities come along.

Danny Ings has proven the value of having a prolific striker on one’s ranks with eight goals already this term, and adding another in the form of Tottenham’s Janssen could seriously aid Hasenhuttl’s quest to keep the Saints up.

The 24-year-old may have struggled during his time at Spurs in finding it hard to dispose star man Harry Kane of the main striker’s role, but there have been some moments of promise during his time in North London to suggest that he has what it takes to succeed in English football.

The Dutchman became a fan favourite at Tottenham as a result of his relentless work-ethic and overall tenacity when leading the line, with Janssen striving to improve and make an impact whenever he was on the field, regardless of his form in front of goal - his strike in the 4-0 win over Bournemouth back in April 2017 earned the loudest cheer of the day.

And in a Southampton side in which Hasenhuttl will want his front men leading by example and pressing quickly and intensely from the front, Janssen could prove to be a very shrewd addition indeed, while the fact he netted 31 times in for AZ in the 2015/16 season suggests that he also has the predatory instincts in the box to regularly find the back of the net.

Clearly, the 24-year-old is in need of a fresh start to get his Premier League career going again, as it’s not going to happen at Tottenham anytime soon - Southampton could be the ideal destination though.

And with the Saints themselves in need of reinforcements to once again avoid the drop this term, it’s a January move that appears to be in the best interests of all parties involved as £7.2 million-rated Janssen (as per Transfermarkt) seeks to resurrect his stuttering Premier League career.
