One of the most-covered sagas in the January transfer window so far has concerned Southampton’s centre-backs, with Jose Fonte and Virgil van Dijk linked with an exit from Claude Puel’s side and the Saints eyeing replacements.
While Southampton will understandably fight tooth and nail to keep dominant Dutch defender van Dijk at St Mary’s, an exit for Fonte is a wise move, as the Portuguese defender is not getting any younger and there are better options out there.
What’s concerning, though, is the Saints’ apparent interest in Liverpool’s Mamadou Sakho as a potential replacement. With the French defender struggling to impress during his time in the Premier League and being involved in numerous off-field controversies, it seems like a rather bizarre move.
Southampton have one of the best scouting networks in the Premier League and always seem to unearth some real gems; with Virgil Van Dijk being evidence in the current side, whilst the Saints have unearthed the likes of Dejan Lovren, Nathaniel Clyne and Dusan Tadic in recent years.
Instead of playing a premium price for a Premier League defender, those on the south coast should look elsewhere for targets as their scouts should be able to find some top targets across European football.
If anyone can unearth a player from seemingly nowhere it’s top brass Southampton and there aren’t many reasons to suggest that Sakho would be a good choice. Though he is experienced in the league, it counts for little with his performances.Like what the TT have on offer? Sign up for more notifications!
