It just wouldn’t be a transfer window without Southampton seeing some of their key players getting linked away – would it?
And, much to the inevitable dismay of Saints around the country, this window is absolutely no different.
The most prominent rumour of all, though, is that of Jose Fonte leaving the club after he handed in a transfer request towards the end of last week.
The experienced Portuguese defender appears to have had enough of life on the south coast and so, whilst we await to see where he heads next, it’s time to take a look at who could come in to replace him.
The latest name doing the rounds is Mamadou Sakho according to The Mirror and, thinking about it, that may not be a bad acquisition at all.
The French defender has been out of favour at Liverpool after falling out with Jurgen Klopp in the summer and whilst that may put Saints fans off – he’s not actually a disruptive influence.
To his credit, despite his grievances with the German, he’s done what he’s been told and played for the Reds’ U23 side.
To what we’re aware he’s not sulked or ruined team morale nor has he shirked playing for the younger team when many players would have.
Saints would be getting a decent enough professional, then, even if he can be slightly over-enthusiastic.
That should mellow, though. He’s seven years Fonte’s junior which means he’s not even in his prime as a defender and showed last season he’s more than adept in the Premier League and in Europe.
He’s a physical specimen but his intelligence on the pitch has come on leaps and bounds and alongside Virgil Van Dijk, the Saints would have a very imposing looking defence.
It could be a move that actually improves the club, then, with Fonte only going to decline and, given Southampton’s superb ability to evolve, you wouldn’t put it past them to make it into a success.
