Would Southampton be overpaying for this £30 million rated centre back?

The Saints fans are in the Transfer Tavern at the moment, quietly sipping their drinks as it looks like their prized asset is looking to leave the club.

Reports from the Sun have revealed that Southampton are set to offer Middlesbrough £30 million for Ben Gibson’s services as they look to replace Virgil van Dijk, following the Dutch defender handing in a transfer request.

Despite being part of the Boro side who faced relegation last season, they only conceded 53 goals which for a side who got relegated isn’t bad at all.

In fact, they conceded the second least amount of goals in the bottom half of the table and a lot of that was down to the partnership between Ben Gibson and Callum Chambers.

There is just one stumbling block rearing its ugly head again.

In what world is a Championship player worth £30 million?

If the Saints do let Van Dijk go then they’ll have no problem affording it but considering Eric Bailly cost Man United £30 million last season and going even further back, Thiago Silva cost PSG just £33 million it seems a bit much.

It looks like Southampton are going to be subject to what they have been doing all transfer window, attempting to out price any club that comes after their price asset.

The fact remains that Mauricio Pellegrino will need a top centre back to fill the void that the departing Dutchman will leave and Gibson is just that, a top centre back.

It would be a lot of money to spend but we are getting closer and closer to deadline day and perhaps more importantly, the start of the season.

The Saints will need to act quickly as to not upset the balance of their side.
