The Southampton fans here in the Football Transfer Tavern have a lot of questions which need answering, first and foremost who will be taking the place of sacked manager Claude Puel.
However, while a successor is yet to be appointed, it seems the powers that be at St. Mary’s are pressing on with transfer dealings nonetheless.
Before Puel was appointed last summer the board sanctioned a deal to bring Nathan Redmond to the club from Norwich, and now it seems they are targeting one of his England U21 teammates and a former Saint.
According to reports from trusted journalist Graeme Bailey at the Gambling Times, the Saints are prepared to offer Arsenal £2om for defender Calum Chambers who left the club in 2014 and spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
Before moving to The Emirates for £16m three years ago, Chambers was in fine form on the south coast and across his breakthrough season usurped Nathaniel Clyne in the right-back slot.
The 22-year-old has since switched to playing more regularly as a central defender, a role he occupied in the youth ranks at Southampton, and could well be brought in as a long-term replacement for Jose Fonte.
Saints fans, we want to hear from you! Would you have Chambers back? Is he really worth £20m? Let us know…
